Lewis Vail moved to Muskingum (Coshocton) Co., Ohio in 1809 from Rockhingham Co., Va. In 1809-1813 he was a member of the Ohio militia and took part in the operations against Indians. Robinson (Harvard, A.B. 1887; Strassborg, Ph.D. 1889) became assistant to Sereno Watson at Gray Herbarium at Harvard, 1890-1892 and Curator after Watson's death in 1892. His published works include a revised edition of Asa Gray's Manual (1908), Flora of the Galapagos Islands (1902) and contributions to Gray's Synoptical Flora of North America (1895, 1897).
