Memoirs of Lewis Vail, 1844, Canton, Stark Co.

Vail's manuscript memoir depicts immigration to Ohio, life in the first settlements, including travels, business, schools, medical care, and courts. A significatn portion of the manuscripts deals with the War of 1812 in Ohio, especially operations against the Indians, including the siege of Fort Meigs in 1813.

Lewis Vail moved to Muskingum (Coshocton) Co., Ohio in 1809 from Rockhingham Co., Va. In 1809-1813 he was a member of the Ohio militia and took part in the operations against Indians. Robinson (Harvard, A.B. 1887; Strassborg, Ph.D. 1889) became assistant to Sereno Watson at Gray Herbarium at Harvard, 1890-1892 and Curator after Watson's death in 1892.
